Geomatics involves several methods and technologies for collecting, managing, and analyzing data about Earth and the phenomena arranged on and near its surface. It consists of different components such as GIS(Geographic Information Systems), Cartography( the art and science of map-making), Geodesy( the study of earth's size and shape), Remote Sensing, and Aerial Photography, and GPS (Global Position System). Geomatics Engineering provides a wide range of occupational options such as Boundary, Mapping, Land Surveying, Urban planning, Space exploration, Agriculture, Transportation, Navigation and location-based services, Geomarketing, Emergency mapping, and oceanography.
So, here are five easily available online courses that will help you get started with your future in different areas of Geomatics.
1. GIS, Mapping, and Spatial Analysis Specialization, University of Toronto
Duration: approx. 24 weeks
Status: Self-paced
Fees: Free
The University of Toronto is offering a course, which provides specialization in GIS, Mapping, and Spatial Analysis via Coursera. This specialization includes four courses, i.e. Introduction to GIS Mapping, GIS Data Acquisition and Map Design, Spatial Analysis and Satellite Imagery in a GIS, and GIS, Mapping, and Spatial Analysis Capstone. It will help the learners in creating GIS data, finding and evaluating data found online, designing an effective map, and filtering data and analyzing spatial relationships, and how to work with satellite imagery. The participants will need to either build a portfolio of their work for the Capstone course, applying what they learned through "mini-projects" or plan and execute one large project.

2. Introduction to Urban Geo-Informatics, Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Duration: 6 weeks
Status: Self-paced
Fees: Free
Overview: Hong Kong Polytechnic University with edX is bringing the Geo-informatics course which explores the various technologies involved, and how those technologies help in retrieving data and imploying the geographical data in decision making. It will also explore the fields of Remote sensing, Geographic information systems (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as GPS, and Underground Mapping. This course will help you gain an understanding of how these technologies help in shaping and understanding the world, we live in.

3. Application of Geoinformatics in Ecological Studies, ISRO
Status: Starting from December 1, 2020
Fees: Free
Overview: ISRO center Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) is now offering another free online course named " Application of Geoinformatics in Ecological Studies." This course is designed for organizations, students, NGOs, and other stakeholders engaged in Ecological studies. Users attending programs under CEC-UGC, CIET, and other networks, as well as an institution on high-speed National Knowledge Network(NKN), can also participate. The ISRO IIRS course will give the learners a better understanding of ecological systems. They will also learn about an overview of the application of geoinformatics in ecological studies; ecological niche-based species distribution modelling; ecological studies using LiDAR; biodiversity assessment with geoinformatics; geostatistical analysis in ecological studies; biodiversity informatics and citizen science; satellite telemetry for wildlife studies; and ecological studies using cloud computing. Participants will receive a certificate based on 70% attendance and 40% in the online examination. Interested learners will need to register with the IIRS platform by selecting the name of their institution and providing all other required details. All you need for this course is good internet connectivity and a desktop.
