HISTORY OF DRM
With developments in piracy in the film industries, music industries and many other industries there was the birth of DRM (Digital Rights Management).The DRM was first introduced in the late 1980’s.But the actual development of DRM happened during the last 5 years.
WORKING OF DRM
The DRM deals with usually two most important procedures i.e. encryption and packaging. But enabling DRM deals with some changes in CONTENT, PLAYER, and LICENSE SERVER.
- CONTENT: Your contents must be encrypted and packaged in a format which is compatible with DRM systems
- PLAYER: Since the content could be encrypted your content player must be able to request an encryption key to decrypt the content so different platforms may require different systems. Just like goggles’ wide vine which could be played only in chrome and Firefox.
- LICENSE SERVER: The license server works as a communicator between encryption key and a content. Whenever a decryption is requested the license server is authenticates and responds the requests.
After all these things packaging the content of a creator to make sure its safe is more important.And here trans coding plays a major role.
DRM requires the content to be encrypted but in a compatible format generally MPEG-DASH or HLS and both are reliable protocols.
Every platform uses different encryption and protocols like Apple’s Fair Play uses SAMPLE-AES encryption and HLS packaging while Play Ready uses Common encryption and MPEG-DASH.
Once your content is encrypted and packaging is done it needs to be transferred to your server or Content Delivery Network(CDN) from streaming to the users.
