Emotiv’s headset works by first learning a pattern of your brain waves. It keeps a record of what parts of your brain are more active than the others. The person wearing the headset is asked to think of himself pushing the object seen in the computer in front of him. He focuses on that thought for a little while with high concentration. The computer records his brain activity while he thinks that thought. Now when the computer sees the same brain pattern, it will move the object in the same direction where you imagined yourself pushing it. The same process can be used to move basically anything like moving a ball lying on the ground and then making it stop or anything you can think of.
